Scintillating Fiber (plastic optical fiber)
Scintillating fiber is a light-emitting fiber used for radiation detection. This page lists the lineup (emission peak/attenuation time/attenuation length), structure/material, and transmission attenuation data.
Functions & Features
Scintillating fiber is a type of plastic optical fiber.
It has a multilayered structure (one or two layers) consisting of a core (inside) of polystyrene resin containing a fluorescent agent and a methacrylic resin cladding (outside), which emits light when exposed to radiation.

CERN LHCb
Scintillating fibers (plastic optical fibers) are used in the "LHCb experiment" at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), outside Geneva, Switzerland. The LHCb experiment aims to get closer to the origin of the universe and matter by colliding subatomic particles and accurately capturing the movement of the many particles that are generated. This material is used in the detector to record the trajectory.

Attenuation Length Measurement Method
Attenuation lengths are regularly measured for all produced products using 3 m fiber samples.
The decay curves in the figure (example) are approximated by the single exponential formula I(x)=I₀ exp(-x/λ) except at very short distances. The attenuation length λ is calculated using data between x = 100 cm and x = 300 cm.
Export and Important Trade Control
| Scintillating fiber is on the list of items that may be diverted to military use as specified by the Export Trade Control Order. To export this item requires approval from the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and the end-user and intended use must be confirmed for each sale. Therefore, depending on the end user and intended use, we may be unable to accommodate certain inquiries. |
